Although many people might not look forward to grocery shopping, I consider it one of my favorite activities. I have two golden rules: never shop on an empty stomach, and always have a list. How you organize that list is entirely up to you, but I’ll share my approach.

I divide my list into sections that look something like this:

MEALS I PLAN TO MAKE:

  • Meal 1
  • Meal 2
  • Meal 3

Each meal includes a balance of proteins, vegetables, fats, and carbs. As you become more comfortable with shopping, you’ll notice you might already have some staple items, like condiments, that don’t need to be repurchased every time.

Once I’ve planned my meals, I list the ingredients, categorized like this:

Proteins:

  • 1
  • 2
  • 3

Vegetables:

  • 1
  • 2
  • 3

Fats:

  • 1
  • 2
  • 3

Carbs:

  • 1
  • 2
  • 3

You can adjust the quantity of items as needed, but this system helps organize your shopping. It saves time since many of these categories can be found in the same areas. I write this list either on a piece of paper or in the notes app on my phone.
